1942 ~ 2024 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Tribute

In loving memory of

Barbara Bryan Cunningham

December 10, 1942 – February 7, 2024

Barbara was 81 years old when she peacefully transitioned on the morning of February 7, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born on December 10, 1942 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the second of four children. She graduated from Hopkinsville High School in 1960. Barbara earned her Associates Degree in Nursing at Golden West College in 1979, graduating with honors. She worked as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager at Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach for 11 years. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at Long Beach State University in 1990, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and was honored with the Outstanding Senior in Psychology Award. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Long Beach State University in 1995, receiving the Outstanding Master’s Graduate Award. From 1995 to 2010 Barbara held several positions at College Hospital in Costa Mesa, most recently as Director of Clinical Case Management. She was a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Huntington Beach from 2010 to 2016.

Barbara was known for her quick wit, authenticity, and warmth. Despite over 50 years of life and career in Southern California, she retained her Kentucky accent and relished sharing memories of the family and friends who shaped her childhood. She was a voracious reader and lifelong learner. Outside of her professional life she could usually be found with her nose in a book or walking briskly along the Huntington Beach boardwalk near her home, which she adored.

She was a loving wife to Al Masters for 41 years; a beloved mother to Cynthia, Camille, and Susan, and stepmother to Vanessa and David; proud grandmother of Olivia, Sophia, Emma, Eamon, Greer, Fletcher, Bijan, and Ayli; cherished sister to Phil, Katherine, and Ann; and steadfast friend to Carolyn Bracey Lowe.

Words cannot express how deeply she was loved, nor how dearly she will be missed.

In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, alzfdn.org.
