Tribute

Debra Lee Sellars, a radiant soul who graced this world for 66 years, left us unexpectedly in her sleep on January 31. Born on March 22, 1957, in Munising, Michigan, Debbie's early roots were in the scenic landscape of Munising before her family moved to lower Michigan and eventually settled in Bay City where she grew up before finding her forever home in California in 1978. Her journey, intertwined with love, laughter, and unexpected twists, touched the hearts of all who knew her.

In the tapestry of her life, Debbie was predeceased by her beloved husband Craig and her parents Levi and Joan Steinhoff. Her departure leaves a void that words struggle to fill.

Her surviving sisters, Linette Neumeyer (Gary Chuhran), Mari McKellip (Pat), and Alice Karpinski (Frank), along with nieces Sari Custer (Bryan) and Ariah Schugat, and nephews Richard Neumeyer, David Gerard, Ali ElGhoul, Wesley Gerard (Darcee), Youssef ElGhoul (Cali), Levi Karpinski (Shannon), Frank Karpinksi, Zayn Alaoui, and Mohammed Alaoui, carry the weight of her absence. A constellation of great nieces and nephews, and one cherished great-great niece, many amazing Aunts, Uncle, and cousins along with a host of incredible friends who have become our California Family, join in the collective sorrow. She especially loved her role as ‘Humama’ to her sweet cat, Bennie Grace. Bennie is now settling into her new forever home with a dear friend.

Debbie's career, rich and varied, found its pinnacle in her role as a lunch supervisor at Mesa View Elementary School. It was a chapter where she found profound joy, touching the lives of countless school children with her warmth and caring spirit.

Beyond the professional, Debbie's essence resonated in her love for life, effortlessly turning strangers into lifelong friends. Her passion for capturing the beauty of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, Sherman Library & Gardens, and the Huntington Central Park Urban Forest through walks and photography echoed her appreciation for life's fleeting moments.

Debbie's heart beat with an enthusiasm for NASCAR racing and NFL football, with a special place reserved for her beloved Detroit Lions. Whether cheering for her favorite driver on the racetrack or passionately supporting her team on the football field, her love for sports added a vibrant dimension to her life, bringing joy and excitement to those around her.

As we navigate the waves of grief, may we remember Debbie not just for the roles she played but for the love she shared, the connections she forged, and the indelible mark she left on our hearts. May she find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to illuminate the corners of our lives.

Memorials are being planned for both California, in the near future, and Michigan on March 23, 2024 in Bay City.
