Beloved son and brother - Unofficial Mayor of Seal Beach
James Edward (Jimmy) Johnson, Jr. died of natural causes on February 22, 2022 in Redondo Beach, California. He was 77 years old. He is survived by two brothers, Alan Flurkey and Greg DeCuir, and he is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ann Flurkey, and his stepfather, Burton Francis Flurkey.
Jim was born on October 13, 1944 in Glendale, California and grew up in Covina, California. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and stationed in Okinawa, he piloted LCM troop landing crafts during the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the service, Jimmy traveled extensively through central America in a VW Microbus with his cat, JJ.
Upon returning home, Jim settled in West Hollywood, California where had a long career in transportation at both Universal and Warner Brothers Studios where he drove a variety of vehicles ranging from very large rigs to executive limousines. He was married in 1967 in Canoga Park, California to Sherry Klave and fathered one daughter, Stephanie.
Jim was beloved by his brothers, Alan and Greg, their spouses Bonnie and Maureen, and his many cousins, among them Sandy Corby, Sherry Metcalf, Susie Word, Mary Elise De Cuir Herbert, Suzanne De Cuir Moody, Carolyn De Cuir Planca, John Decuir, Rosemary De Cuir and Laura Decuir. He is fondly remembered by his four nephews, Ian, Zach, Nathan, Ryan and his niece, Hillary. He will be missed by his longtime geriatric caregiver, Jennifer Voorlas.
Throughout his life, Jim had an abiding interest in Eastern philosophy, photography, computers, and the stock market. He was a loving caregiver to his mother and stepfather at the end of their lives at their residence in Seal Beach, California. Jovial and affable to all who met him, he came to be known by his family as the “Unofficial Mayor of Seal Beach.
Jim is remembered for the three words he frequently uttered, “Well, that’s interesting!”
Service
Jim will be interred in a ceremony officiated by Fr. Phil McCormack at 1 PM on April 21st, 2022 at Good Shepherd cemetery in Huntington Beach, California, where his remains will be placed along with his mother and stepfather.
