Norman Charles Meyer

December 29, 1932 ~ July 27, 2021 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Tribute

Norman Charles Meyer passed away on July 27, 2021.  He was at home and surrounded by his wife and eight children.  Norman was born in Kansas City, Missouri on December 29, 1932, the second of four sons to Carl Frederick and Mary Agnes (née Burlage) Meyer.

After serving his country in the Army and earning his BS Physics, Norman married the love of his life, Dorothy Terry West on November 8, 1958.  In the early years of their marriage, Norman and Terry moved around the country as he worked on several early aerospace programs, and eventually settled in Fountain Valley in 1965 where they raised their family.

Faith, family and engineering were most important to Norman.  He participated in his church as a CCD teacher and provided for his children to attend Catholic grade and high schools.  Norman was always curious about how things worked and enjoyed working on the cars and the house.    He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with his children, whether it was helping with math homework and school projects, teaching how to tune-up and do an oil-change on a lawnmower or car, or building a doghouse.  The family has many fond memories from annual summer vacations in Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Norman had a long career as an aerospace engineer and worked on many projects over the years including the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs.  He brought his children to work open houses so they could meet astronauts, view moon rocks, see the Apollo command module, and climb into a mock-up of the Space Shuttle.

When near one another, Norman usually held Terry’s hand.  On one of their dates, a police officer knocked on the window of their car and asked what they were doing.  They held up their Rosary beads and said they were praying together.  Throughout their 62 years of marriage, most of their days ended with praying the Rosary together.

In retirement, Norman and Terry enjoyed spending time with their children and their families.  He enjoyed sharing family meals and telling Grandpa jokes and sneaking food to the family dogs.  Norman is survived by his wife Terry, his brother Ron Meyer of Kansas City, MO, his children Chuck, Theresa, David, Susan, Dianne, Ron, Matt and Tom, 27 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
